Every year I enter a small number of international photography competitions as a tool to help me grow as an artist. I find that competitions help me stay on my ‘A game’. Of course I’m always delighted to receive an award but I also learn a lot from submitted images that do not receive acknowledgement. In my previous career I was used to an environment where work was peer reviewed but I no longer have that to guide me so competitions go some way to replacing that feedback system. Spending time looking at images and asking myself what could be improved following a competition can help me stay focussed on developing as an artist. Returning to an image after the judging period, usually at least a few months, helps me see an image with fresh eyes. Sometimes I’d change a lot, sometimes a little and other times I remain happy with my submission. Competitions are a subjective animal and keeping this in mind is something I endevour to do. After all with art you can never please all of the people all of the time :)
